3 Imputations in the Bible

Imputation means adding or crediting something to your account. For example, if I give you money, I’m adding or imputing to your bank account. The Bible teaches 3 key imputations that in its raw essence, captures the story of the Gospel. Hope you enjoy my pictures that I’ve drawn using Paper by 53!

1 Corinthians 15:22
For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.

2 Corinthians 5:21
Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so that Christ could make us acceptable to God.

1 Peter 2:24
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

Romans 5:17 (NLT)
For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:8-9
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

  1. Hi Seth,

Beautiful illustration and explanation. It seems that there is no “fairness” on the 3rd “imputation” because the Righteousness of Christ is imputed ONLY to BELIEVERS and not to ALL men.

On the 1st, Adam’s sin “imputed” to ALL men.

On the 2nd, the sin of Adam imputed to ALL men and the sins of ALL men “imputed” to Christ.

It only follows that the Righteousness of Christ ought also be “imputed” to ALL men (NOT only to “believers”).

NO one can become believer by himself/herself. God has to also IMPUTE Christ’s FAITH to a person BEFORE he/she believes. And it is obvious that not ALL believe at the same time but as per TIMING of Father God until everyone believes.

One simply believes because of the IMPUTED faith of Jesus Christ.

    1. Thanks Macario for your kind comments. I believe Christ’s righteousness is only imputed to those who exercise the faith given by God unless one is unable to e.g. babies, children below age of accountability, mentally disabled.

Tell me what you think.
