Dr Alexander Duff’s Call to Missions

Dr Alexander Duff, missionary from Scotland to India from the 1800s, said:

“Mr. Moderator! Is it true that Scotland has no more sons to give to India? When Queen Victoria wants men to go there, there are hundreds of men who want to go, and anxious to go, and parents buy commissions, and give money to get their sons into the army of India; and here is the Lord Jesus calling for volunteers, money in the bank and no men! Fathers and mothers say they don’t want their sons exposed to the diseases of India, and are afraid they will lose them. Now, Mr. Moderator, if it is true that Scotland has no more sons to give to India, if you will announce it here tonight, and though I have come back in my old age to die with my family, and with a shattered constitution–if it is true that Scotland has no more sons, I will pack up tomorrow and be off to the shores of Ganges and let the people of India know that there is one poor old Scotchman who is ready to die for them!”
