‘I never have a problem with temptations because I always give in.’
That joke might give you a chuckle or two but behind it lies a truth. The truth that we all struggle with temptations. It’s so easy to give in.
- It’s easier to tell a lie than speaking the truth.
- It’s easier to lust than keeping our eyeballs in check.
- It’s easier to steal office stationary than buy your own.
- It’s easier to download illegal movies and software than buy it legit.
We seem stuck in this vicious cycle and can’t get out. After giving in to temptations, we feel guilty and useless. We promise God that we will do better the next time but come next time, it repeats all over again.
But wait! Being Christians, hasn’t the power of sin been broken? Why do we continue sinning?
Indeed, Christ has broken the power of sin in our lives, and we need to believe that. For a person without Christ, there is little chance to resist temptations. I’ll like to share 3 simple truths from the Bible how we can overcome the temptations that hound us daily.
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
1. Temptations aren’t unique to you
You can’t give the excuse that your situation is so unique, that you had no choice but to give in. Face it. The temptations you struggle with are faced by millions of people past, present and future. That gives us hope doesn’t it? Whatever temptations you’re going through has been faced and dealt with by Jesus at the Cross.
For we do not have a high priest (Jesus) who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
2. God will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear
God knows you better than you know yourself and gives you only what you can resist. That means whatever you’re tempted by right now can be resisted. What a faithful and merciful God!Even when you’re struggling so hard that you’re almost to the brink of exhaustion, remember that God is faithful. He will not provide a temptation that you cannot defeat. The victory is there for you to claim. Will you believe that?
3. God always provides a way out
The Bible says “when” you are tempted, not “if”. You got to be mentally prepared to fight temptations when it comes. Not only has God given you a heads up, He also has provided a way out. Getting out might not be easy but we are to endure it till the temptation passes. This may call for drastic actions to overcome the temptations, but we are sure that there is a way out. Pray, believe and act on these truths.
